METAMORPHOSEON

Interactive Soft Robotics Instalation

Linguistically taken from ancient greek and etymologically meaning constant change, the Roman writer Ovidi narrates the creation of the world with 250 myths, in
between them, the story of Medusa. She was punished by Athena by turning her into a
monstrous creature, after she was raped by Poseidon in the temple of Athena. Those
who gazed into her eyes would turn into stone.
Taking the representation of the myth as the women head full of snakes, the present
project stablishes a paralellism with it.
Using interactive soft robotics, we present a piece compound for 16 tubular arms
pumpped with compressed air, according to the position of the users who are around
it. The result is a constantly changing installation, where the physicality of the
moving arms continuous to the space with the projection of them as moving shadows,
creating a metamorphose in between the users and the room.
The piece is compound for 16 arms ( expandable nylon mesh + silicone tube + crystal
tube), all of them attached to an acrylic base with specifically designed 3d pieces.
It is placed 1,30m from the floor, so the led projectors don’t interfere with the
eyes of the spectators. Under the sculpture we have a LIDAR sensor, and in the ceiling a technical box, from where all the tubes depart to the compressor, placed at
least 50 m far from it.
